A little of this and a pinch of that
My grandmother was an amazing cook and I wish I had some of her recipes to pass on to my grandkids but she was one of those culinary savants that just knew …. you need a little of this and pinch of that. No recipe, just a crock of flour, butter, whatever, and in “two shakes of a lambs tail” we would have before us apple dumplings that I still dream of but have never recreated.
Oh, and when it came to measuring she -would dip her hand into her crock of flour and take a handful - which may or may not equal a particular equivalent and a pinch or two of something or other and before we knew it we were hanging hand cut noodles to dry. How I wish I had her recipe for hot endive salad with bacon and eggs, or her chocolate mayonnaise cake… but I don’t because she just gathered together what she would need and threw together a little of this, and a pinch of that …. and it was good.
So I’m blogging my cooking adventures so I can remember a year later how I made that “Election Cake” or “Quinoa salad” because sometimes a little of this and a pinch of that can lead to something pretty amazing.
