Hi! We’re moving along with another German inspired recipe today, but giving it a twist. The ingredients are all typical German fare, but we are going to grill our sandwich Panini style. Oh, and yippee, the German pickles I made last week are ready to use, so we will be having them alongside. Okay, let’s get this ball rolling…..
For four sandwiches you will need:
¼ cup mayonnaise
1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 Tablespoon grated cream horseradish – I use Inglehoffer
¼ teaspoon dill weed – I use Pampered Chef All-Purpose Dill Mix
¼ teaspoon caraway seed
4 crusty sandwich rolls
1 cup or more sauerkraut – prewarmed
4 slices or more Swiss cheese
4 slices or more ham – black forest is best
4 slices or more smoked turkey
A Panini grill or whatever you like to grill your sandwiches with.
First, turn on the grill and let's get it warming.
Next, mix the mayonnaise, mustard, cream horseradish, dill week and caraway seed. Set aside.
Then, cut bread in half and load with one slice of the cheese, ham and turkey. Spread some of the mayonnaise mixture between the cheese and meat. Drain and apply the sauerkraut in the middle of the sandwich - between the meats (so as not to cause the bread to become soggy).
Now, brush some of the mayonnaise mixture over the top and bottom of the roll - instead of butter, as you usually would. The spread will flavor the outside and help brown and crunch up the outside of the bread.
