Grilled Gorgonzola Burgers w/ sautéed mushrooms & onions

Hi!   Well, we’re grilling again.   This time of year it’s just nice to be able to do as much cooking outdoors as possible.   It keeps the kitchen cool and gets me out of the house.  Of course, once out in the yard I get a close up view of the ivy and roses that need trimming…    But back to grilling - tonight we are grilling burgers, and not just any burger.  No ketchup on these babies.  These burgers are savory and succulent – flavored with rich gorgonzola cheese, sautéed mushrooms and onions, and enclosed with homemade buns.   Don’t be intimidated.   They are easy to put together.  Follow me…..


Ingredients:   serves 6

6 Hamburger Buns using slider bun recipe :  Slider Roll Recipe

2 Lbs. Lean Ground Beef
1 envelope onion soup mix
3 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
Garlic Salt and Pepper to Taste

1/2 of a yellow onion
1/2 of a red onion
1 large package of sliced mushrooms
1 Tablespoon butter
1 Tablespoon diced garlic
1 Tablespoon balsamic vinegar

3 Tablespoons or so of crumbled Gorgonzola cheese
1 cup of mayonnaise
2 Tablespoons of crumbled Gorgonzola cheese (for spread)


Earlier in the day, or even the day before, make your buns using our slider bun recipe and just shape the buns larger for standard sized burgers. 

  
About three hours before you want to start grilling, mix up your meat.   Combine the ground beef, envelope of onion soup mix, and the Worcestershire sauce.

Then, shape into patties – the picture shows 4, but I also made some slider sized patties.   This recipe will yield 6 standard sized burgers.


Then, lightly sprinkle over the tops of the patties the garlic salt and pepper.   Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate.


Then, mix the mayonaise with 2 Tablespoons of Gorgonzola cheese and refrigerate.

About 30 minutes before you start grilling the patties, slice your onions and mushrooms.   Then, place them in a nonstick pan along with a tablespoon of butter, and diced garlic.   




Sauté over medium high heat until you start to get some browning.  Then, add the balsamic vinegar and continue to sauté until nicely browned.  When done turn heat down to low to keep warm.



Now, place your patties seasoned side down on a pre-heated grill and then sprinkle the tops of the patties with garlic salt and pepper.   Cook until you have a nice char on the bottom and then flip.


Once flipped, top each burger with a mound of crumbled gorgonzola and close the cover.


When the cheese is beginning to bubble, move the burgers to the top grill and continue to cook until you have your desired doneness.  

With the burgers on the upper grill, place the buns center side down and just grill long enough to get a grill mark on the inside portions of the buns.

With the burgers cooked and the inside of the buns marked,  it is time to assemble.

Top the bottom bun with the burger.

Then, top the burger with a small spoonful of the mayonnaise/gorgonzola mixture.

Then, top the mayonnaise/gorgonzola mixture with some of the grilled mushrooms & onions.

Then, cover with the top bun.
